Sweetwater ISD board declines to adopt daily prayer time under Senate Bill 11
Summary
Trustees voted 6-0 to decline adopting a policy to allow daily prayer time under Senate Bill 11, following a recommendation from Mr. Spencer that the district not adopt the plan because of administrative burden; a public commenter had earlier voiced concern about the proposal.
At the Jan. 21 meeting, the board acted on Senate Bill 11, which would require school districts to allow daily prayer time for students. Mr. Spencer informed trustees that the board was required to act on the bill and recommended the district not adopt the plan, citing administrative strain on campus administrators. Trustee Jeff Allen moved to deny adoption; the motion was seconded by Trustee Kelly Sheridan and passed 6-0.
Before the vote, Carolyn Frawley addressed the board during the public forum to express concern about the agenda item referencing Senate Bill 11. The board’s formal action was to decline adopting a daily prayer time policy at this meeting; no policy was adopted.
