Ontario SD 8C delays social studies curriculum adoption to allow more local review

Superintendent Nicole Albisu told the board that business item one — the planned adoption of the district's social studies curriculum — would be moved to next month because the review team needs additional time to complete its evaluation. Albisu said the district follows a six- to seven-year cycle for curriculum adoptions and that the prices for new instructional materials have risen significantly.
Albisu also said the OMS student report was removed from the agenda. Director Lisa Reeser asked how the curriculum adoption process works; Albisu explained that the Oregon Department of Education provides a list of possible curricula and that building-level teams review options and make selections. Director Mike Blackaby noted he had asked Director of Finance Devin Collins to assist with questions about costs.
The board did not act on a curriculum adoption at the work session and will revisit the item at the next meeting. No formal vote or motion on the curriculum was recorded during the session.
