JROTC expansion and activities highlighted; instructors and cadets credited for leadership development

Richardson ISD staff and program instructors presented an update on the district's JROTC program, outlining curriculum, activities and ongoing recruitment and retention efforts.
Kelly Sellers, the district's Health/PE and JROTC director, described JROTC as a leadership and citizenship program that complements academic work and postsecondary readiness. "JROTC works to maintain a high degree of honor, courage and commitment to RISD cadets," Sellers said, and she highlighted the program's classroom curriculum (LET levels), extracurricular teams, and scholarship pathways including Army ROTC awards reported during the presentation.
Board members asked about cost, teacher/instructor recruitment and demographic participation. Presenters noted the program began at a single campus and expanded districtwide with bond-funded infrastructure and community leadership, described recruitment practices (visits to junior highs, flag programs and social media outreach) and discussed ASVAB administration and how ASVAB/CCMR data feed college and career metrics. Cadets and instructors described activities such as leadership weekend, color guard appearances and national competitions.
The presentation was informational; trustees thanked instructors, cadets and program leaders for their work and engagement with students.
