Village council hosts presentation on May ice pigging to clear iron and manganese deposits

The Port Ludlow Village Council hosted a presentation by Olympic Water & Sewer Inc. about an ice pigging (ice slurry pipe‑cleaning) campaign set to begin Monday, May 5. Jason White, vice president of Olympic Water & Sewer, said the work is intended to accelerate removal of historical iron and manganese deposits that have caused customer complaints.
"From 2022 to 2024, we had 83 complaints for color and 4 for taste and odor," White said, citing the system's post‑filtration chemistry changes and the limits of extended flushing. He described ice pigging as a way to scour interior pipe deposits more efficiently than unilateral directional flushing.
The project is contracted to American Pipeline Solutions and is quoted as roughly 20 loads (pushes). White said crews will stage equipment near the marina, operate daily including weekends, and aim to finish by Memorial Day. Residents will receive three AlertMedia messages on a workday: a morning notice that crews are in the area, a pre‑push message asking residents not to use water for the push window, and an all‑clear when the push is complete.
The village council also noted the presentation will be recorded and an evening repeat will be held at the Beach Club on May 23. Village staff and the contractor will be available after the meeting for follow‑up questions.
