Residents press North Caldwell for consistent rules on Walker Park holiday displays

During the Feb. 10 public-comment period several residents asked the Borough to clarify rules for displays at Walker Park and to share dimensions so proposed donated displays can proceed.

Doreen Custode asked that dimensions for displays at Walker Park be shared so a proposed donation could move forward. Other residents urged the borough to maintain neutrality on religious displays. Andrew Bronsnick asked the council to “avoid displaying religious symbols and avoid violating Supreme Court rulings on the matter.” Rabbi Sputz and Dr. Razzak expressed appreciation for prior displays (menorah and Christmas tree) and asked that the practice continue as a sign of inclusivity. Mustafa Abrahim and Adam Mustafa requested that a donated crescent moon be displayed; Adam Mustafa said the crescent moon display is “intended to spread joy and inclusivity by bringing people together in celebration.”

Mayor Raymond said the Borough intends to honor the community’s diversity without promoting or endorsing religions and that clear, consistent guidelines are followed; Legal and Ordinance Chair Stroever was asked to review related ordinances where appropriate. The minutes record no formal policy change at this meeting; the council discussed preparing consistent guidelines and following legal advice.
