The board was told the Healthy Homes Lead Abatement Program grant that once totaled $2.3 million has been reduced to roughly $300,000, leaving the department with far less capacity to serve households with lead hazards.
Director Valencia Maponya said the remaining funds were already further reduced by prior expenditures and that 14 households were currently being supported with six additional households waiting for service. She described modifications to a corrective action plan prepared by the prior health officer and said she was engaging state representatives to attempt to rebuild trust and discuss reclaiming additional funding.
President Harris expressed guarded optimism that the larger grant was not permanently lost but Maponya cautioned that regaining funds depends on meeting grant deliverables and corrective actions. Maponya said she will dedicate Fridays and focused effort over the next six months to advance the work plan under the constrained funding.
