The Board of Selectmen reviewed a proposed delegation of authority under Charter section 4.02(b) that would allow the 1st selectman to extend letters of offer for routine hires to avoid delays in recruiting staff. The Chair said the proposed procedure would retain board oversight for hiring exceptions and disciplinary actions and would include periodic staffing reports to the board; the board agreed to revise language and review the proposal again under old business at a future meeting.
Town staff presented a staffing report covering recruitment, positions in process, open offers and recently accepted offers. The staffing report said the town received "about a 175 applications" for the full-time executive assistant to the 1st selectman, narrowed candidates to nine for interviews, and reported recent hires, including a full-time parks and rec maintainer and a part-time police officer sworn in yesterday, "a guy named Tyler Spence" who retired from state police after 20 years. Staff also noted two new budgeted positions planned to begin 2026-07-01 (an IT support technician estimated at about $73,000 and a lead custodian/assistant building maintainer at about $50,000).
