Resident urges crosswalk, beacon at Hollow Park crossing on Route 6

A Woodbury resident asked the Board of Selectmen on May 26 to press state transportation officials to add pedestrian safety features at the Route 6 crossing by Hollow Park.

First Selectman read a written statement from Samantha Longo Knowell urging the town to act before “there's a tragedy.” Longo Knowell said the nearest marked crossing is about a quarter‑mile away and called for at minimum a marked crosswalk and, ideally, a rectangular rapid‑flashing beacon or pedestrian‑activated signal given high pedestrian activity near the ball fields and pavilion. “I just don't wanna wait until there's a tragedy to have this conversation,” the statement said.

Town staff noted the Route 6 corridor study and prior CTDOT audits have identified pedestrian conflicts at nearby locations and said a formal safety review could be requested by Woodbury's municipal coordinator. The First Selectman said the town will wait for the Route 6 corridor study results (expected in about four to six weeks, per the meeting) before taking further steps but acknowledged that a municipal coordinator outreach to CTDOT would be a low‑cost first measure to put the location on record.

Board members discussed data and timing: the First Selectman shared crash data summaries from Local Traffic Authority training showing 125 speed‑related crashes in Woodbury from 2020–2024, and he noted CTDOT is installing pedestrian crossings with signals in comparable locations. The town agreed to consider formal municipal outreach to CTDOT and to flag the location in NVCOG corridor study recommendations.

The matter remains a request for action and study; no formal vote or funding decision was taken at this meeting.
