The Troup Independent School District Board of Trustees voted unanimously Feb. 9 to decline adoption of a formal policy under SB 11 (Education Code 25.0823) that would designate a period for prayer or reading of religious texts. Superintendent Jones told the board that SB 11’s policy parameters would require parental consent and staff oversight and could be more restrictive than current student-led Bible study at lunch and before school.
Homer Dickey moved that the district not approve a policy designating a period of prayer or reading of the Bible or other religious text, and to allow students to continue their own Bible studies and prayer time as they choose; Jake Howard seconded. The motion carried 7-0. The board’s action leaves student-led religious activity in place while avoiding creation of a district-designated period or associated monitoring requirements.
