Pitman commission outlines three-phase plan to clean Alcyon Lake

Councilman Uyehara on Oct. 15 described a three-phase plan from the Pitman Environmental Commission to address algae, vegetation overgrowth and debris in Alcyon Lake.
"Phase 1 would involve a cleanup of the park, as well as cleanup in the lake by use of kayaks," Uyehara said, and the commission envisions Phase 2 as purchasing a skimmer attachable to a small boat to collect additional floating debris, followed by Phase 3 to buy aerators for the lake. Commission members also researched firms to recommend to the borough for dredging work.
Mayor Razze linked the lake concerns to broader environmental activity in the borough, noting an Oct. 1 event marking the Lipari Landfill’s removal from the Superfund list attended by EPA and NJDEP representatives. The mayor also said a beaver dam is causing water backups near homes on Howard Ave and that Public Works Supervisor Fred Rodi will investigate.
The council approved event permits for volunteer cleanups: an Alcyon Park Cleanup on Nov. 9 (9 a.m.–12 p.m.) and an Alcyon Lake Cleanup on Nov. 10 (10 a.m.–12 p.m.), both organized by the Pitman Environmental Commission; contact: Robert Holwitt. Those events offer the borough an initial volunteer-based response while commissioners evaluate longer-term mechanical options and dredging vendors.
