Council approves sale of Walter Avenue lot and Sabetta Complex; residents voice parking, green‑space concerns

On Oct. 14 the council adopted two property sales. Ordinance O.25.23 authorized the sale of Block 121 Lot 22 (Walter Avenue) for $10,500 with no public speakers at the hearing. The council then conducted a public hearing on O.25.24 (sale of Block 42 Lots 5, 6 & 8, the Sabetta Complex), which it adopted by roll call: Ayes—Council President Thomas, Councilman Haynes and Councilman Singleton; Nays—Councilwoman Armistead and Councilwoman Turner; Abstained—Councilwoman Evans. The stated sale price for the Sabetta Complex was $255,000.
Multiple residents and representatives of the Sportsman Club opposed the Sabetta sale or asked the borough to consider alternatives. Meredith Wright urged preserving the land as green space, saying this “time and money can be used in other ways than building homes.” Sportsman Club trustees noted parking impacts and historical interest in purchasing the property themselves. The mayor said he was excited about the opportunity and that the borough would find another place for the sports program.
