Troup ISD declines immediate retrofit of buses for three-point seatbelts, cites budget limits

Support Services Director Preston Lindsey told the board March 19 that retrofitting the district's existing buses with three-point seatbelts as required by SB546 (Transportation Code 547.701) would impose costs the current budget cannot absorb. He recommended the district not proceed with retrofits at this time because of the financial burden on the current fleet.
Lisa Lewis moved to accept that recommendation and Jake Howard seconded; the board approved the motion 7–0 and noted the district will revisit the issue if grant funding or state allocations become available. The board did not adopt a timeline or identify retrofit cost estimates in the minutes beyond the statement that the expense is not affordable under the current budget.
