Monroe Middle School students showcase SEL, athletics and engagement at board meeting

Students from Monroe Middle School presented to the board about experiences that shaped their school engagement and sense of belonging.
Brooklyn Boudry described turning her academic life around with support from peers and staff: “Without the help of my peers in this school, I wouldn't be where I am today,” she said. Kinsley Smithers credited SEL lessons for helping prioritize mental health and belonging; Evelyn Lentz described how sports keep her active and help her build friendships; Max Zepa described classroom engagement techniques and humorously noted that teachers sometimes use student slang to connect with learners. Staff and students presented valentines to the board and explained a short glossary of student language on the back of the valentines to illustrate student culture and engagement.
Board members and administrators thanked the students and emphasized the value of student voice in informing district decisions about transitions and programming.
