Board members questioned the pace, outreach and data behind the administration's recommended elementary redesign, asking for additional surveys, clearer budget line items and more public presentations before implementation begins.
Several board members said the district had relied heavily on qualitative feedback so far and asked administration to gather anonymous staff and parent surveys and to publish presentations and FAQs online. One board member said prior census material suggested a steep enrollment decline, stating, “We're gonna lose 1000 kids in the school system in the next 5 years,” a figure other members asked administration to clarify and substantiate with the census brief and demographic data. Administration acknowledged the need for clearer communication and said some information had been shared in news articles and the district’s weekly review but agreed to expand outreach.
Fiscal questions also figured in the discussion. A board member with experience in the business sector urged a fuller accounting of capital and line-item costs rather than a single rounded number; administration and other members noted some renovation costs (elevators, sinking-fund work) are fixed or already bid separately and may not all be additive to the redesign budget. The board asked administration to return with a more detailed financial breakdown and a schedule for communications and transition supports for affected families and staff.
