Superintendent Shaw outlines plan for 5–6 intermediate school

Superintendent Shaw presented the administration's vision for a 5–6 intermediate school that would reorganize grade configurations across district elementary buildings and centralize fifth- and sixth-grade instruction. Shaw told the board the packet distributed to members shows projected section and enrollment counts for each site and emphasized that preschool classrooms already at a building would be preserved: "So there are already it is 2 preschool classrooms in this building. So this building would not be losing a preschool classroom." (Shaw).

The administration said the redesign is intended to create room for encore classrooms — art, music, technology and physical education — by moving 5th and 6th graders into a single intermediate building. Shaw said the presentation revisits questions raised at an earlier meeting and that the administration will continue refining details (staffing, schedules and logistics) if the board chooses to advance the plan. The board asked clarifying questions during the presentation; administration said no final decisions have been made and that a February board meeting may be required to approve next steps.
