Monroe board elects Tom Heck president; multiple officer races split 4–3
Summary
At its Jan. 14 organizational meeting, the Monroe Public Schools Board of Education elected Tom Heck president and filled vice president, secretary, treasurer and other officer posts. Several contests were close, with three officer votes decided 4–3.
Tom Heck was elected president of the Monroe Public Schools Board of Education during the board’s organizational meeting on Jan. 14, following nominations from board members and a roll-call vote.
The board also elected Darla Myers as vice president (by a 4–3 vote), Stacy Terrasi as secretary (4–3), and Gary Jenkins as treasurer (4–3). Carrie Williams was chosen as parliamentarian by a unanimous roll call, and Gary Jenkins was named the district’s liaison to the Monroe County ISD. Clerk Jamie administered votes and recorded the tallies.
The contested votes reflected differing views among trustees about roles and scheduling priorities. One nominee, after being introduced by colleagues, thanked the board for support and pledged to serve in the officer role if elected. The newly elected president received paperwork and assumed presiding duties for the remainder of the meeting.
Board procedure during the organizational portion followed the district’s bylaws for officer selection. The temporary chair — appointed earlier in the session — presided while the board conducted nominations and roll-call votes.
The board will hold the next regular meeting Jan. 28 at 7 p.m. and resume a suspended work session immediately after adjournment.
