The Waco ISD board meeting opened with a series of recognitions for student achievement, fine‑arts honors and district awards.
Presenters celebrated Waco ISD students who earned national and state honors, including the Inside Our Schools Spanish category winners Jessica Lara (University High) and Saul Torres (Waco High), and multiple UIL theater and Thespian Festival honorees. The district also announced Grace Benson as the Texas Education Agency’s Title 3 Leader of the Year for her leadership of the ESL and bilingual program serving roughly 3,400 students, and recognized Magnolia with the TASB Stand Up for Public Education community partner award.
Superintendent Spicer introduced several leadership appointments and hires: Dr. Renita Carradine was recognized for promotion to Assistant Superintendent of Human Resources; Dr. Ebony Cousins was introduced as principal of JH Hines Elementary; the district welcomed its new West Avenue principal (introduced as "Craig Volkman" and corrected to "Troy" during remarks); and Jill Anderson was presented as the district’s new executive director of communications. Trustees and staff took group photos and the superintendent highlighted upcoming back‑to‑school events tied to these leadership transitions.
