Interim superintendent outlines district goals; trustees ask for student-facing metrics

Interim Superintendent Dr. Monica Luna provided the board with an overview of Valley View ISD's mission, vision and four district goals during the April 13 meeting: high-quality curriculum; effective instruction; family and community engagement; and district operations.
Dr. Luna said each director should establish a minimum of three SMART (specific, measurable, achievable, relevant, time-bound) goals that align to the district goals and assist in measuring progress. Multiple directors briefly reviewed their current goals and status for the school year, including Business & Finance, At-Risk & Safety, Fine Arts & UIL academics, data management/PEIMS, student support services/federal programs, special education, athletics, human resources/technology, district operations, support services and child nutrition.
Trustees used the report to press for results-oriented metrics. They asked for quantification of student participation in fine arts, proactive strategies and data on chronic absenteeism ("how many of the students not meeting the 95% is due to chronic absenteeism?"), compliance metrics for special programs, coach training completion rates and ledgers for booster-club fundraising. One trustee summarized the request: "To summarize in one sentence, two things, 1) What's your metrics to ensure that whatever you're doing, you're being measured effectiveness and 2) how is that measured through the students’ perspective…"
The board did not adopt new policy; trustees requested that directors return with more specific, student-facing evidence of program effectiveness and participation at future meetings.
