Cheryl Davis reported the Child Nutrition Fund is balanced but currently holds an excess fund balance the district must reduce to comply with Texas Department of Agriculture (TDA) rules limiting fund balance to roughly three months of operations. She said the district has bids for $1.2 million in campus walk-in cooler/freezers and $500,000 for emergency generators that will be included in the next-year amendments to draw down balance.
"We have to spend down 2,800,000 of this fund balance to be in compliance with TDA," Davis said, and explained the timeline for bids, construction and the likely need to amend the fund budget once those purchases are formally authorized. She noted the district's child nutrition operations have been profitable compared with some peers, but contractual constraints and TDA oversight limit how and when funds can be spent.
