Forks Middle School cites test gains after 'Salmon Camp' outdoor program

A Forks Middle School presenter (introduced as Miss Kearns) described the school’s Salmon Camp and shared assessment and participation data with the board Sept. 9.
The presenter said the program enrolled about 34–35 students with an average daily attendance of roughly 23.6. She summarized assessment results: “Pre test average was 69%, post test, 85%.” The presenter said 16 students showed growth on certain measures and that the program’s curriculum blended math, reading and science around a salmon theme.
Speakers said the program was supported by a state grant described as "No Child Left Inside," which will provide the district with an invoiced payment in the $2,000–$3,000 range rather than as a donation. The presenter praised partners including the Wild Salmon Center, Trout Unlimited, Olympic National Park and local hatcheries for hands-on field experiences that organizers said helped build engagement and skills.
