West Rusk CCISD approves new innovative courses including Video Game Programming and General Employability Skills

The West Rusk County Consolidated Independent School District Board of Trustees approved a slate of innovative courses for the 2026–27 school year during its June 15 meeting.
Trustee Jeff Mason moved to approve the new course offerings and Vice President Mathew Eastwood seconded. Superintendent Jake Jackson explained that two courses are renamed versions of existing classes—Kinesiology replaces Health Science, and Video Game Programming replaces Esports—and clarified that General Employability Skills is a junior high offering. The motion carried unanimously.
School leaders told the board the Student-to-Industry Connection course is designed to support internships and real-world experiences; Jake Jackson said the courses are not a formal work program but do lead to internships and follow-up tracking to see how students use the skills.
