The WESLACO ISD Board approved an agreement on Aug. 11 to partner with the Boys & Girls Club to operate after-school programming at four elementary campuses — Memorial, Silva, Ibarra and Rico — for the 2025–26 school year.
A trustee asked whether the same four campuses have been served in prior years; staff said these campuses have historically hosted the program and that the vendor proposed staffing for four sites. Another trustee described the geographic distribution as uneven and asked staff to study options to expand access to the south side of the district in future years.
"We've got 10 elementaries, and only 4 get it — so we're gonna study this for next year," a trustee said during discussion. The motion to approve was made and carried; one trustee initially abstained and then rescinded a second before the final vote.
Administration said routes and bussing will allow students from additional areas to access the program and that staffing constraints guided the vendor's proposal. The board asked staff to return with recommended options to broaden coverage if feasible.
