Two participants in the Citizen Public Safety Academy addressed the Commission during informal communications on April 21, praising the program. Joanne Carron, who served as a sign language interpreter and attended the academy, said she was the first participant to complete the academy while using a wheelchair and thanked the Police Department for accommodations that made the experience fully immersive.
Victoria Montalvo said the program gave participants a greater understanding of the Police Department and encouraged others, including members of her family, to participate. Mayor Bates commended Police Chief Terence Nicolas and Deputy Chief Evelyn Steenekamp for the program and its meaningful presentation to participants.
