North Riverside adopts 2024 building, energy, mechanical, fire and residential codes

The Village of North Riverside Board of Trustees unanimously approved a package of updated construction and safety codes on Feb. 2, 2026.
Trustee Bianco moved to adopt the 2024 International Building Code (26-O-01), the 2024 International Energy Conservation Code (26-O-02), the 2024 International Property Maintenance Code (26-O-03), the 2023 National Electric Code (26-O-04), the 2024 International Mechanical Code (26-O-05), the 2024 International Fire Code (26-O-06), and the 2024 International Residential Code (26-O-07). Trustee Tricoci seconded each motion and roll call votes were AYES: Trustees Bianco, Canas, Santucci, Sarro, Tricoci; NAYS: None; ABSENT: Trustee Czajka. Each ordinance was carried and the reading was waived.
Community Development Director Peter Hughes had requested the updates; the trustees adopted the new codes with an effective date of 60 days following passage, as read into the record by Trustee Bianco. The package brings North Riverside’s municipal code into alignment with recent national model codes used by municipalities for building safety and energy standards.
The board did not record any dissent during the votes. The adoptions were presented as ordinances amending multiple chapters of Title 15 (Buildings and Construction) of the North Riverside Municipal Code. The measures take effect as specified in the ordinances unless noted otherwise.
