Greenville introduces new K‑9 'Major' after private donation helps department restore third unit

The council heard from the police department as it introduced the department's newest K‑9, Major, who was described as a Dutch shepherd trained in narcotics detection and apprehension. Staff said Major was certified at the end of a six‑week training course and began street work in August.
The Chief (S6) thanked L3 Harris for a generous contribution that allowed the department to acquire and field the third K‑9. "So this is K9 Major. Named after Majors Field," the Chief said, and described Major's training and handler assignment to Officer Meeks. Staff noted Major was brought from a Texas K9 Solutions vendor after selection by current handlers.
Council and staff also noted the department will host regional USPCA trials in Greenville next year that will be open to the public.
