Board approves birthday and bereavement leave policies for employees

The Eastern Oklahoma State College Board of Regents voted to adopt two new personnel policies at its March 13 meeting: a Birthday Leave policy that allows employees to take a designated day off for their birthday without using accrued leave, and a Bereavement Leave policy that establishes a general three-day guideline following the death of a loved one while allowing supervisor and Human Resources discretion for specifics.
Dr. Randy Harp told the board both policies were developed by the Staff Council and reviewed by the Executive Council prior to submission. Staff Council President Colby Carpenter voiced strong support during the discussion. Regent Brian Lott moved to approve both the Birthday Leave and Bereavement Leave policies and Regent Cara Bland seconded. The motions passed on a roll-call vote: Ayes — Cara Bland, Latt Jeffrey, Brian Lott, Larry Spradley and Leland Walker; Nays — none; Abstentions — none.
Board members noted the policies provide meaningful support for employees' personal and family needs while having minimal financial impact on the institution. The board did not attach an immediate funding allocation to the policies; implementation details were left to administration and Human Resources.
