County approves $402,850 ADHS grant for diabetes prevention and congenital syphilis response

The Cochise County Board voted 3–0 to approve an intergovernmental agreement with the Arizona Department of Health Services providing $402,850 in Bridal transformation funds to the county health department for prevention and treatment programs.
Health Director Lang said the grant will target diabetes prevention and management, and fund efforts to prevent and treat congenital syphilis following a local uptick in positive cases among pregnant patients. “So we're going to be working from a prevention standpoint and also a management standpoint for diabetes,” Lang told the board.
Supervisors expressed appreciation for the health department’s work and asked clarifying questions about program scope and preventability; staff said congenital syphilis can cause significant birth defects and fetal death and emphasized the grant’s dual role in prevention and treatment. The IGA was approved unanimously.
