Council to consider $1.50/month solid-waste fee increase to offset rising costs

Laura, the staff presenter, recommended raising the monthly solid-waste charge for single-family households by $1.50 — $18 a year — saying the change would move residents to paying about 89% of the total estimated 2027 annual household cost ($211.08) and generate roughly $25,000–$30,000 to relieve the general fund. "We would recommend that we look at adjusting the monthly rate that's charged to the each single family household by a dollar 50 a month, which is $18 a year," Laura said, noting the county requires certification of special assessments by Aug. 25.
Council members discussed the merits of the modest increase and its comparative position to neighboring jurisdictions. Ben said the rise was "extremely modest" and that the citys single-hauler contract is a major savings; Sam observed Mission remains cheaper than nearby Merriam even after the proposed change. Staff confirmed the current contract applies only to single-family households and that multifamily complexes currently contract separately; Laura said staff would explore multifamily options and return next week with a resolution if the council gives direction.
