Neighbors split over McNabb House plan as CRA budget fight escalates

The McNabb House and proposed Botanical Gardens in northeast Pompano Beach drew sharply divided testimony during the Sept. 16 CRA meeting.

Supporters said the gardens would bring safe, educational, accessible outdoor space close to families. "We can't go to any of these parks. There's just too much danger there," said resident Lauren McGee Weiss, who told commissioners she took time off work to attend and backed the project. Several parents and residents highlighted programming for young children and people with special needs as reasons for support.

Opponents questioned the project's scale and cost and whether CRA funds are the right source for what some called an expensive amenity. Critics also raised historical concerns, including recent controversial disposals at Westview Community Cemetery, and demanded clearer procurement and vendor selection transparency. "We need to prioritize basic needs," said a Northwest resident who opposed spending on gardens while public‑safety and maintenance needs persist.

Staff said the project has site‑plan approval and identified potential funding including a proposed revenue bond. Project costs and maintenance were discussed in detail by staff and consultants; CRA staff and the budget director noted options for phasing and potential revenue streams (including a restaurant/operator model) that could offset operating costs. No final decision was reached; the board recessed and will reconvene to pursue budget adoption and any plan amendments.
