Unity Community Action director outlines local services, cites $436,530 in home weatherization spending

Camille Vickers, executive director of Unity Community Action, told the Cordele City Commission on Aug. 4 that the agency provides housing, utility assistance, weatherization, employment supports and a diaper program across multiple counties.
"I am the executive director at Unity Community Action," Vickers said, introducing staff and board members. She described the program’s federal roots — the Economic Opportunity Act of 1964 — and said Unity uses Community Services Block Grant (CSBG) funding to provide case management and client assistance. Vickers said Unity has helped 53 households with rental payments during the current program year and gave examples of small direct payments ranging from $50 to $200.
Vickers offered specific program spending figures. "For [Chris] County, we've had 5 homes completed, and we've spent $85,470.77 dollars invested in your county," she said, and later added, "we spent $436,530 in all of these homes." She also described back-to-school and summer camp supports — "We sent 60 for, Chris County; we sent 30 kids to summer camp" — and said the group provides grocery cards, school assistance and $1,200 awards for some graduating seniors.
The director asked commissioners to help refer eligible residents and said Unity will share printed materials. She also previewed a community fundraiser, the "Great 8 Sheriff's Roundup," which Vickers said has earned local coverage and will pair lighthearted "bail" fundraising with community food and entertainment.
The commission thanked Unity for its local staff presence and for direct service work in Cordele and surrounding counties. Vickers left handouts and offered follow-up contact information for residents seeking services.
