McBee officials say USDA-RD has been unresponsive on multi-purpose building loan

Town officials told the council Dec. 2 they have struggled to get timely responses from USDA Rural Development on a loan tied to the town’s multi-purpose building project.
Mayor Glenn Odom said he and staff have sent multiple emails and phone messages — "4, 5, 6 times" — with little or no reply. Councilman Robbie Liles said the loan was awarded on Sept. 24, 2024 and that USDA-RD staff were responsive before a federal government shutdown; since then, he said, USDA-RD has been difficult to reach. Liles said he contacted Senator Lindsey Graham’s offices in Columbia and Florence; a staffer in Florence emailed a letter the mayor needs to sign so the senator’s office can follow up with USDA-RD.
Council members described the lack of agency response as "very frustrating," and said the town believes USDA-RD needs to provide material to the project architect before the building can move forward. Town staff will sign and return the form provided by Senator Graham’s office and continue outreach to USDA-RD.
