McBee council approves first reading to update business license rates

Mayor Glenn Odom told the council he prefers not to delay changes recommended by the Municipal Association of South Carolina, saying he "rather do it now" and citing an example in town where a large manufacturer paid $40 while his small business paid $337. Councilman James Linton moved to approve the ordinance’s first reading; Mayor Odom seconded and the motion passed with "all in favor." The council opened the floor for public comment but recorded no public speakers before closing the hearing.
The mayor said the town will obtain a Columbia spreadsheet showing each McBee business, the amounts they currently pay, and what Columbia recommends. This first reading advances the ordinance; the council did not adopt final language or a final effective date at this meeting. The ordinance will return for subsequent readings as required by town procedures.
