South Waco Elementary renovation nearing completion; district expects August occupancy

Gloria Barrera and the district’s construction partners provided the board with a multimedia update on the South Waco Elementary renovation and occupancy plan, showing before/after photos and a firm phasing schedule.
Andrew Faust of O'Connell Robertson said construction is moving quickly and that the addition (library, makerspace, new classrooms and gym) completed last year allowed campuses to occupy updated spaces while work continued. "They're pushing hard here till the end and, you know, still planning on delivering at the beginning of August so they can start with a brand new whole finished building this next school year," Faust said.
Contractor John Kazanis (Masonic Construction) walked trustees through completed mechanical and fire‑safety work, final ceiling and finish schedules, and the plan to receive and install kitchen equipment — a package the district largely funded through Child Nutrition funds to preserve bond dollars. Kazanis said the team is targeting substantial completion on phases 2 and 3 by July 31–August 1 and working with the city for final inspections and certificates of occupancy.
District and campus leadership will stage furniture deliveries and a shortened move‑in schedule so teachers can occupy classrooms before the first day; Meet‑the‑Teacher was scheduled for August 7. Barrera emphasized the warranty and closeout coordination that will remain in place as the contractor finishes punch‑list items.
