Superintendent reports progress on pods, secure entry and playground; flags finish-date concerns

Superintendent Dr. Harrison updated the Preston Joint School District Board on construction and facilities Sept. 18, saying multiple projects are underway but some deadlines were missed.
He said two teachers have moved into Pod-5, work on Pod-6 will begin with OSB and sheetrock and officials hope to finish by Thanksgiving. The junior-high secure entry (man trap) is complete, the bus garage blacktop work is done and the Pioneer playground had a ribbon-cutting. But Dr. Harrison flagged problems: "the biggest obstacle to school is access," he said, and reported concerns about bubbles in the Pioneer gym surface, cuts in the track and overall integrity of new blacktop. He told trustees he would obtain a specific Pod-6 timeline and communicate with the construction supervisor about missed deadlines.
Trustees pressed on the district’s ability to outsource construction and on communication with contractors; Dr. Harrison said staff had earlier permission to outsource work before summer but needs better contractor communication going forward.
The board requested a 10-year facility plan and additional follow-up so trustees can evaluate outstanding construction issues at the next meeting.
