Board approves official girls wrestling program, funds stipends

The Preston Joint School District Board voted Oct. 16 to approve an official girls wrestling program at both junior high and high school levels.
Principal Ben Szabo presented two stipend funding options that varied by number of coaches and total stipend dollars. He said there was renewed interest at the high school and junior high and recommended district-funded stipends to ensure coaching and event support.
"There seems to be interest for girls team at the high school again this year," Szabo told the board while outlining Option A (more staff support, $12,600 in total stipends) and Option B (leaner model, $9,000 total stipends). Trustees asked about projected participation and agreed that district resources should support equitable access.
Trustee Launa Moser moved to approve the creation of girls wrestling as an official sport and to fund the program; Chris Jones seconded the motion and it carried 4–0 (Susan Yardley absent). Administration said it will begin recruiting coaches and returning to the board with roster and budget updates.
