Red Oak ISD board votes 7–0 not to adopt mandatory on-campus prayer policy

The Red Oak Independent School District Board of Trustees voted 7–0 on Jan. 20 not to adopt a resolution that would require every campus to provide a period of prayer and reading of the Bible or other religious text under Section 25.0823 of the Education Code. Johnny Knight moved not to adopt the resolution and Brian Sebring seconded; the motion carried unanimously.
The measure considered asking the board to adopt a district-wide policy implementing Section 25.0823, Education Code. According to the agenda discussion, the board chose instead to maintain existing local and legal policies rather than enact the proposed resolution. The vote followed the board's reconvening from a closed session earlier in the evening.
Board President Melanie Petersen presided over the decision. No amendment or further committee referral was recorded in the open-session minutes. The board recorded the roll call with all seven members voting in favor of the motion not to adopt.
