City administrator outlines summer construction: 9,400 feet of water main and 207 lead service lines to be replaced

City Administrator Derrick Champion provided a multi-project infrastructure update at the June 3 council meeting.
Champion said construction on Central Park Avenue (W. 159th to W. 157th) will begin the week of June 8 with D. Construction Inc. as the contractor; the project is funded by a DCEO grant of $100,000 and is expected to take less than a week. He reported that Green Alley Phase II is complete and undergoing testing with the Metropolitan Water Reclamation District (MWRD) and that combined sewer replacement work on Wolcott Avenue (161st–163rd) began May 18 under Cook County's Climate Resiliency Program.
On water infrastructure, Champion said, "The East Side Water Main and Lead Service Line Replacement - Phase I Project will begin construction this summer. The project includes the replacement of approximately 9,400 feet of aging water main and 207 lead service lines serving homes along Winchester Avenue, Damen Avenue, and Dixie Highway." He added that residents in affected areas will be notified before work begins and that the East Side Combined Sewer Rehabilitation Phase I will also start this summer under IEPA State Revolving Fund financing.
Champion also noted that a $350,000 State grant will go toward improvements to the pedestrian bridge over Interstate 57 (lighting, appearance, and accessibility), and that a ribbon-cutting will follow final completion of the Green Alley work. Residents were advised to exercise caution in active construction zones and to expect contractor notices 48 hours before work starts.
