Parents allege student was assaulted during Pledge; organizer announces Youth Advisory Summit scholarship

At the Dec. 8 Whitney ISD Board of Trustees meeting, Amy Teal told the board she is sponsoring a scholarship for a Youth Advisory Commission Summit and said there are three openings for high school students in the program. Teal also raised an allegation that an employee assaulted a child for failing to stand during the Pledge of Allegiance and asked the district to address staff conduct and communications with families.
Meagan Stewart followed during public comment with a related concern about her son being assaulted on WISD property after not standing during the Pledge. Stewart said parents were not informed when the incident occurred and urged better training for staff on handling students with 504 plans. The board did not record immediate remedial action in open session; the public comment was entered into the record.
