North Riverside board adopts package of 2023–24 model building and safety codes

The Village of North Riverside Board of Trustees voted unanimously to adopt a package of ordinances updating the village’s building and safety regulations to the most recent model codes.
Terry Bau, the attorney presenting the ordinances, told trustees that the ordinances amend several chapters of the municipal code to adopt the 2024 International Building Code and related 2023–2024 model codes. "The 1st ordinance is an ordinance amending chapter 15.52 … adoption of the 2024 international building code," Bau said while introducing the ordinance package. Trustees moved to pass each ordinance and waived formal readings before the roll‑call votes.
According to the presentation, the updates include the 2024 International Building Code, 2024 International Energy Conservation Code, 2024 International Property Maintenance Code, the 2023 National Electric Code, the 2024 International Mechanical Code, the 2024 International Fire Code, and the 2024 International Residential Code. Trustee Bianco said staff and technical review produced redlined drafts; staff recommended adopting the updated codes with an effective date 60 days after passage to align with Illinois statewide requirements.
Each ordinance carried on a roll‑call vote with trustees voting "yes" during the meeting. The board did not record any amendments during the floor votes. Implementation steps cited in the presentation include retaining existing local amendments to reflect North Riverside’s specific needs and publishing the ordinances per municipal code procedure. The ordinances were listed on the agenda as ordinance numbers 26‑0001 through 26‑0007.
