The district moved forward on hiring and a plan to recruit international candidates under a J‑1 exchange/teacher program.
The administrator (speaker 3) described contacting Colorado Learning and the Greenheart sponsor for a J‑1 visa program, receiving more than 20 applicants in early screening and beginning interviews. The administrator said the program requires English proficiency testing, background checks and Montana licensure steps; she recommended offering intent‑to‑hire letters and arranging community housing and orientation if trustees approved contracts. "They have to pass tests and be completely... They also now... have to pass a English proficiency test," the administrator said when explaining program requirements. Trustees moved to offer contracts for listed applicants pending completion of required documentation and satisfactory background checks.
Why it matters: J‑1 hires can quickly fill certified staffing gaps but require administrative work to ensure compliance with U.S. and state licensure rules, housing arrangements and special education support. Trustees discussed retaining existing special‑education expertise to support incoming teachers during the transition.
