Markham schedules Arcadis drainage reconnaissance after east‑side flooding; resident seeks speed bump

Devonna Alexander, a Markham resident since 2005, told the council that storm runoff had risen to her garage and that water backs up in neighborhood ditches. She asked what the city will do to prevent repeat flooding and also requested a speed bump on her block, saying an officer had told her to "get license plates." Mayor Roger Agpawa acknowledged the problem and said, "I wish I could tell you this is not common, but it's common," promising that staff would follow up and that the city would pursue enforcement where residents neglect driveway or culvert maintenance.
City Administrator Derrick Champion told the council Arcadis, a civil engineering firm, will be on site April 22 to perform field reconnaissance on the drainage area; the work is funded under the Cook County Climate Resiliency Program and aims to restore existing drainage ditches to mitigate flooding. Cook County representative Al Kendall said the county has invested "millions of dollars" in Southland resiliency and is coordinating with Water Reclamation to return funds for foundation and drainage work.
