The Board of Elections and Registration voted to call a special election in the City of Mableton on Nov. 3, 2026, to place a referendum asking whether the city may exercise redevelopment powers.
Daniel, the meeting presenter, told the board the statutory process requires the referendum to be called at least 90 days before the election and said “it has to be called 90 days before the election, which would be August 5.” Board members asked whether the ballot question’s wording could be clarified; Daniel said the text comes from the legislative act and Exhibit A contains the act language, so the board must use the bill’s language (read aloud as “Shall this act be approved,” authorizing redevelopment powers).
A board member moved to call the special election and the motion was seconded. The chair announced the motion passed, recorded as 5 to 0. The board also discussed that the city of Mableton is taking its first steps to call its own referendums under the redevelopment statute and that procedural timing and statutory drafting drive how the question appears on the ballot.
The board did not amend the ballot language at the meeting. The board scheduled its next regular meeting for Aug. 10 in the BOC Room at 100 Cherokee Street.
