Parents and residents press board for answers after Lake Minitaire closure vote

Several parents and community members used the public-comment period to press the board for clearer explanations after last week’s decision to close Lake Minitaire Elementary. Matt Fleming said the Lake Minitaire Parent Club did not intend to attack the board but sought to "analyze the budget shortcomings and offer different viewpoints and potential solutions, which did not include closing the elementary school or reducing our teacher staff." He asked specific questions about why the district relied on the LB243 soft cap and when teacher reductions were used as a first tool to balance the budget.

Another speaker who identified herself as a parent described the emotional impact on children and questioned why the district would choose an irreversible school closure rather than vote to exceed the soft cap and raise property taxes. "If taxes are going up regardless and one option preserves a functioning successful elementary school while the other permanently closes it, then I struggle to understand why the irreversible option was chosen first," she said. Reginald Preston also called for the board itself to answer technical financial questions and improve transparency following the decision, saying the board "failed to build to fill the void of understanding" after prior public presentations.

Board staff acknowledged receipt of written questions and said they had recorded them for follow up. The record shows public speakers pressed for numbers underlying enrollment forecasts, the district’s use of the soft cap, and the fiscal assumptions used to reach the $750,000 savings estimate tied to the closure.
