District review team commends Scottsbluff Public Schools, recommends tighter instructional alignment

District staff will use the report to guide continuous-improvement goals.
Mike Mason, executive director of curriculum and instruction for Scottsbluff Public Schools, presented findings from an external visit that took place Feb. 2–4. "Our visiting team was comprised of 9 members, including 2 NDE staff, 5 superintendents, 1 curriculum director, and a building principal," Mason said, adding the team interviewed 32 students, 33 teachers and visited 89 classrooms across the district.
The visiting team commended the district for measurable math growth over five years, use of data to identify reading gaps and a strong parent culture centered on "every child every day," Mason said. The team also praised the district's strategic-plan alignment and teacher retention and recruitment efforts. "We have seen really significant growth in math over the past 5 years," Mason said.
The team recommended implementing common engagement strategies across classrooms, aligning instruction more closely with state and ACT assessments, and establishing more systemic implementation from elementary through high school. Mason said the district will produce a finalized report in the coming weeks and convene the continuous improvement committee to set goals for the next year and five-year planning cycle.
