Trustees press staff on pre-K assessments as Loya monitors student progress

Lorenzo G. Loya Primary School staff presented the school's student progress monitoring during the San Elizario ISD special meeting on March 4.
Ms. Julissa Esquivel presented the monitoring materials and described the district's assessment approach. Trustee Alexis Tellez asked whether teachers receive testing training; Esquivel said, "they do get training and will be getting the updated training to be ready for next school year." Tellez also asked whether alternate testing options might better fit PK3 and PK4 students; Esquivel described test information she has researched. Ms. Blanca Cruz added that Loya currently uses CIRCLE testing to align both PK3 and PK4 with data and TIA. Trustees noted the special education population has grown this school year, and Esquivel said Loya has Early Childhood Special Education units; Dr. Jeannie Meza-Chavez confirmed the district retains an Autism Specialist.
The discussion was informational; no policy or budget action was taken during the presentation. Trustees asked clarifying questions about assessment tools and supports for younger learners and students with special needs, directing staff to continue monitoring and to provide updated training plans before the next school year.
