Superintendent highlights Children's Creative Project, 50th anniversary and film screening

Superintendent Susan Salcedo used her Oct. 9 report to highlight the Children's Creative Project and related community events. She said the program, which the county office administers with partners, brought more than 2,000 junior-high and high-school students to the Santa Barbara Bowl this week and reaches "over 70,000 students" countywide and into San Luis Obispo County.
Ellen Barger, who led the AI-and-community programming described later in the meeting, also described the documentary Count It Out, which SBCEO will screen at the Marjorie Luke Theatre. Barger said the film "shows us how mathematics is more than just numbers, that it is the language of reason," and called it a catalyst for conversations about mathematics and democracy. Salcedo and staff distributed posters and handouts about the children's programming and the project's Oct. 11 50th-anniversary celebration at Santa Barbara City College.
The superintendent framed the Creative Project as both performance and education, noting student engagement and multicultural programming (Dia de los Muertos performance) and invited trustees to attend upcoming events. The office plans additional community screenings if the theatre showing prompts interest.
