Council questions discrepancy between PIT count and police figures

During council reports Sept. 3, Mayor Bird and others flagged a discrepancy between the most recent point-in-time (PIT) count for the community and the police department’s figures. The council said the PIT count returned a higher number (reported as 11) while the police department’s local count remained at six, and members said they wanted clarification on how the additional individuals were counted.
"They came up with 11 this time, and we questioned that... And I think, when we referred to police department, we're still at 6," Mayor Bird said while summarizing the PIT results. The council noted the Continuum of Care (CoC) and a Joint Powers Authority (JPA) meeting had been working to coordinate outreach and that the CoC wanted more involvement in JPA meetings to have "more of a voice." No new policy or directive was adopted at the meeting; council members asked staff to follow up for clarification on the PIT methodology and counts.
