Public urges stronger leash-law enforcement; staff points to new signage and police response

A resident raised concerns about leash-law compliance in Dixon parks during public comment at the Sept. 24 commission meeting, recounting a recent attack in Northwest Park in which the attacker's dog was off leash while the other dog was leashed.
"We have a leash law that people are supposed to keep their animals on leashes," the resident said, pressing the commission to post more signs and promote the dedicated dog park behind Hall Park as an alternative. Parks staff Lauren Coteau said staff had posted new park-rule signs at all entrances to Hall Park that include the leash requirement, which makes those rules enforceable. "So that means that anybody entering into that park does pass by a rule sign and that means all those rules are enforceable," Coteau said, and added that police should enforce the leash rule if called.
Staff acknowledged limitations in enforcement capacity and said they will continue social-media outreach to highlight the leash law and publicize the dog park.
