Dixon proclaims October 2024 Fire Prevention Week, urges smoke-alarm checks

The proclamation noted that more than 2,700 people died in U.S. home fires in 2022 and emphasized that working smoke alarms substantially reduce the risk of dying in a home fire.
"And whereas Dixon residents should install smoke alarms in every sleeping room outside each separate sleeping area and on every level of the home," the proclamation read, urging regular testing and escape planning. Mayor Bird also urged residents to contact the local Red Cross, which he said offers free in‑home inspections and smoke‑alarm installation for Salona County residents.
City leaders framed the proclamation as public-safety guidance rather than a regulatory action. The mayor asked if any members of the public wished to speak; none did in person or on Zoom. The proclamation is dated Oct. 1, 2024, and the mayor closed the presentation by signing the proclamation on behalf of the city.
