City staff explained that a recent salary survey showed the Fire Chief classification was below the median of comparable cities, and recommended adjusting the pay range to attract qualified candidates. Staff said the salary range amendment would align the position with the local market; the motion to amend the salary range passed on roll call with one dissenting vote.
The council then considered an employment agreement to appoint Greg Lewis — a retired city firefighter and previous fire chief — as interim Fire Chief while the city conducts recruitment. Staff summarized the terms: "Hourly rate is going to be a 105 per hour with no other compensation or benefits," with a maximum of 960 hours and an estimated assignment from about Sept. 22, 2024, through June 30, 2025, or until the permanent position is filled. The employment agreement and related budget adjustment carried unanimously.
